An Exclu Tutorial by Guest Creative Anthony Gossett.
Before I start, I would like to thank The Exclu Collective and Tamashiiuk for hosting last April’s figure focus and the opportunity to be a finalist.
My approach was to capture Ironman landing into a fight using lighting and practical effects. Going into the setup, I knew I needed to have a fast shutter speed and a lot of light. Therefore, I decided to combine natural and artificial light to accomplish this.
My backyard lol
- Sony A5000 Mirrorless Camera
- Sigma 50-100mm 1.8 Art Lens
- Manfrotto MK290 tripod
- Two lumecubes
- Handheld steam cleaner
Setting up the Shot
After 15 minutes and using movie stills as a reference, I finally got Ironman to look like he was slamming down into a “Superhero Landing”. Afterwards I needed to build the scene. I decided to use some pea gravel from the yard and place it on a small table. From there I started to use the three-point lighting technique to plan the angle of my lighting and the camera.
Below I discuss more about this technique.
- The Key Light –main light used on your subject.
- The sun would be my key light
- The Fill Light –light used to fill in the shadows created by the key light
- I used both lumecubes to illuminate the shadows.
- The Back Light – light used to separate the subject from the background.
- Achieved by the steam when the key light hit it.
- The steam doubled as background light too.
Below are a few pictures to show how I used each light source for this method.
I try not to over process my pictures and keep it clean. For these series of shots, I mainly adjusted saturation, color and clarity and applied the same to all.
Below are the before and after
- ISO 640
- ISO 640
- ISO 400
