Danny Ramirez is back with another brand new shoot this time for Robot’s and Droids Week as he focuses on the relationship between K2 and Cassian and also the fan favourite Skippy The Jedi Droid!

Droids in my opinion can be some of the most loyal companions in the Star Wars universe. The most loyal that stand out to me are K-2SO, BB-8, and R2-D2. Sadly as a collector, I could not get myself to open up my only 40th Anniversary packaging R2-D2 Black Series figure so I decided to replace R2 with R5-D4. You know, the Droid with a bad motivator? Well there was a reason for that happening as I highlight that later on in the text underneath the shot.  K-2SO is a reprogrammed Imperial Droid as many of you would know. The new Cassian & K-2SO comic was the inspiration for the 2 shots that focus on K2. His compassion for Cassian was somewhat obvious to me in the latter half of Rogue One. Even more so in the novelization of Rogue One where moments before his death holding off stormtroopers, he calculates the probability of Cassian making it out alive. The small odds were enough to please him before he shuts down permanently. I hope you all enjoy the shots I’ve done for this theme!

Cassian and K2

For the first one I wanted to get one of K-2SO in action. The recent release of the Cassian and K2 comic showing how they meet inspired me to do this. This was one of their first and most dangerous missions since they met. It shows what K2 can do whilst facing some of the empires elite troopers. Being able to steal the pistol off a death trooper and shooting him in the process while choking a shoretrooper to death. Unfortunately for Cassian, a death trooper specialist gets the upper hand and lands a blaster hit on him.

The aftermath of the brief encounter ends with Cassian getting seriously injured and this is where K2 first expresses compassion towards Cassian. If K2 cared about anyone during his days as a rebel Droid it was Cassian. He analyzes his probability to survive the injury and the odds please him. He comforts Cassian and carries him back to their U-Wing. The inspiration I got from this show of compassion from K2 towards Cassian were from the novelization of Rogue One. During his final moments before his death, he analyzes a probability that Cassian will make it out of scarif, the small odds were enough to please him before he shuts down permanently.

Here is just a fun shot with BB-8 getting pursued by a First Order Stormtrooper on Jakku.

This one may not seem like much but in the Expanded Universe. R5-D4 aka Zippy the force sensitive droid. Foresaw the fall of the Empire and what needed to happen in order for it to come true. While Luke speaks to the jawa, R5 is realizing that this is where his journey ends but it is for the greater good of the Galaxy. Knowing Luke will pick him instead of R2, he plans to self destruct in order for Luke to pick R2 as a replacement therefore kickstarting the events that will lead to the fall of the Empire.

It was all around fun shooting these 4 shots which took longer to do than I originally expected. I live in an area of the United States that is nothing but green so for the last 2 shots I had to set up a sand/desert type diorama. The “fun” BB-8 shot was the one that took the longest to edit as I did not know how to add motion blur to BB-8. I almost gave up on adding motion blur but that would be lazy not to as he is getting away from the stormtrooper after all. In the end I was able to pull it off and glad to be learning more about toy photography as I’ve only been doing this for 5 months. For my pictures I use the following, Lightroom, Photoshop, Baam drain blaster(for the BB-8 shot), a Nikon D3300 with a 50mm AF-S f/1.8 g Prime Lens, manfrotto mini tripod, wired shutter remote, playsand, and the figures which are all black series line.

Thanks to the guys at Exclu Collective for the opportunity to showcase my take on a few of my favorite droids. I would also like to thank Isaiah (blksrs) who was the one that got me into toy photography and helped me a lot months before I got the guts to post my first shot on Instagram of Rey’s encounter with Phasma and one of her snowtroopers on starkiller base. I would not have gotten or discovered this awesome community if it weren’t for him!

A huge thank you to Danny for yet another amazing and thought through submission for an Exclu Weekly Theme. Be sure to catch more of Danny’s work over on Instagram under his handle @danny_r27 and for more of the latest toy shoots, stay tuned to Exclu.
