We’ve been really fortunate to score an interview and insight into the artistic creations of Alex Solis who uses toys and physical models as one of the primary mediums to showcase his talent from such things as an over-weight Spider-man to some not-so-cute-and-cuddly critters. An interview with Alex Solis
“My life long passion is art, even when I take a day off, I’m still doodling.
Realising at a young age that the stereotype of the starving artist might actually impede my ability to pay the bills, I decided to focus on Design and Web development. Learning code and design actually helped with his art in order to add a more visual and concept driven look to everything I create. This lead me to push my work to a new level which has allowed me to travel the world with my art, and share my story through public speaking gigs.
Currently residing in Wisconsin where I work full time on my own brand Oddworx and freelance work. When I’m not working on art, I spend most of his time with my wife, two kids, and his English Bulldog.”
What are you goals for your platform?
I’ve been heavily focused on creating designer toys, but my main goal is to bring my series and characters into a 3d world, being able to hold your own creation on your hands is an amazing feeling, ever since the first designer toy I created, I have been addicted to creating more.
What makes you stand out in the Designer Toy space?
I think what makes me stand out is the style of my work, I work hard on trying to make it stand out from other pieces, very concept driven.
How do you utilise Toy Photography as part of your marketing?
I think it’s one of the most important aspects of presenting and marketing the products and toys, to show and give the toys a different light, and give them a more epic feeling, so people understand they’re not just any toy but a designer unique mini sculpture.
How do you think Toy Photography is perceived by the wider popular culture community?
I think when someone sees a great photo of a designer toy vs seeing the exact same toy in a normal photo, immediately gives you a feeling that the toy is much more important and bigger then just a normal toy.
What are some of the defining moments from your platforms history?
I think my work is still in the earlier stages of where I want it to be, I have been working endlessly to push my own brand and toys to match up along the big guns in the future, but at the same time trying to keep everything affordable and accessible, just have to get it before it sells out! I want people to have and own something unique, that’s a great conversation starter when looking at it.
What do you think makes Designer Toys so popular?
I think Designer Toys bring a lot of personality of the artist, and also the higher quality and feeling that you own and have something that is exclusive and not many others have. Also for me it’s a great way to still buy and collect toys, brings the inner child out of me but at the same time I look at them as sculptures that their purpose is not only to look cool but to tell a story.
What can we expect to see from you in 2017?
I have been working on tons of new projects, I’m hoping this year to launch a few more toys from previous series, but also testing out some new series, at the same time I started working with a few designer toy stores to expand visibility and accessibility for collectors and fans , I really want to be at a point towards the end of this year where I can launch new toys every 1-2 months.
